President Donald Trump has told advisers that Heather Nauert, the State Department spokeswoman, is his leading choice to become US ambassador to the United Nations and he could offer the post as soon as this week, according to sources.  Nauert came to government from Fox News, and served as State Department spokesman for both Rex Tillerson and Mike Pompeo. If confirmed, Nauert will replace current US ambassador to the  U.N. Nikki Haley, who announced last month she would be departing her diplomatic post by year end. Media reports quoted administration officials saying privately that Haley’s departure was a surprise even to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

Trump is expected to announce big changes in his staff after Tuesday’s midterm elections. Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigned at the request of President Trump on Wednesday, one day after Republicans lost control of the  House of Representatives. Sessions is the latest official to resign from a turbulent White House, where Trump is already on his third national security adviser and second secretary of state.
