What gives!? Most of us know the former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is fluent in Russian, and is a classically trained pianist. But an NFL football coach?! Yes, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, who reported that the Cleveland Browns would like to interview the American political scientist and diplomat for the NFL team’s next head coach. “If the Browns follow through on it, Rice would become the first woman to interview for an NFL head-coaching job,” Schefter wrote.
However, Cleveland Brown’s general manager John Dorsey is being somewhat cagey on the reported news, issuing a statement: “Our coaching search will be thorough and deliberate, but we are still in the process of composing the list of candidates and Secretary Rice has not been discussed,” he said, as reported by ESPN’s Schefter. I’m sure Schefter had a reliable source who tipped him off to the NFL coaching prospect.
Rice also denied she is being considered for the Cleveland coaching job:
“I love my Browns — and I know they will hire an experienced coach to take us to the next level. On a more serious note, I do hope that the NFL will start to bring women into the coaching profession as position coaches and eventually coordinators and head coaches. One doesn’t have to play the game to understand it and motivate players. But experience counts — and it is time to develop a pool of experienced women coaches.
BTW — I’m not ready to coach but I would like to call a play or two next season if the Browns need ideas! And at no time will I call for a “prevent defense.”Condoleeza Rice via Facebook
Hmmm….., But keep in mind folks, Rice is a career diplomat adept at keeping “secrets.” Ha! Ha!
Rice Has No Football Coaching Experience Beyond Her Love For The Sport
Rice’s experience in the game was serving on the College Football Playoff committee from 2013-16. The 64-year-old former diplomat is also a long-time Browns fan with an “obsession” with the game and its strategies.
I am all for women being considered for head coaching jobs in the NFL, but realistically, bring in someone more qualified than Ms. Rice. The Cleveland Browns need all the help than can get, being at the bottom of their AFC Division with a lousy 3 Wins – 6 Losses !!!
