71-Year-Old Man Dies In Upper West Side Apartment Fire

A 71-year-old man died inside his apartment when a fire broke out at 10: 17 a.m. Monday morning at 166 W. 87th Street, FDNY officials said. Two others were slightly injured. The man was found unconscious and unresponsive in his room. The fire was brought under control at 10:55 a.m. with as many a 60 firefighters responding to the blaze on the third floor of the 9-story building, according to FDNY. The cause of the fire is unknown as of press time. The identify of the dead man had not been released. The building is a 200-unit apartment for low income and homeless men and women transitioning out of the shelter system into permanent housing. Named Capital Hall, the building provides housing for men and women who are vulnerable to homelessness because of their age, income or disability.

One of the first supportive housing residences in New York City, Capitol Hall was developed by Goddard Riverside, the Settlement Housing Fund and the West 87th Street Block Association, beginning in the late 1970s. Many of its tenants are referred by the Homeless Outreach program.
