Tens of thousands of women returned to the streets of New York City Saturday for the third annual march against the “sexism and racism of President Donald Trump”. They braved the frigid cold, marched and chanted “Hey hey, ho ho, Donald Trump has got to go!” numerous times along the route beginning at Central Park West and 72nd Street and ending at 42nd Street and 8th Avenue. The first march took place in 2017, as a demonstration in support of women’s rights and in resistance to a growing list of gender-related injustices during the inauguration of President Trump. Last year’s march drew an estimated 200,000 participants. The annual Women’s March On NYC is organized by the Women’s March Alliance. The Women’s March is a nationwide movement in which millions have participated across the country during the past two years in a sharp rebuke of what many charge is President Trump’s contempt of women and minorities.

The national marches have served to motivate women in massive numbers to unite against sexism and racism unlike any other time since the 1960’s. It is without a doubt that fed up, angry women took that emotion to the voting booths last November to propel the Democrats to a majority in the U.S. House Of Representatives.

“APATHY IS NOT AN OPTION” “SILENCE IS NOT AN OPTION” were among the multitude of signs women carried and displayed along the march route in NY City. In addition to The Women’s March Alliance event up on Central Park West / 72nd Street, another competing march took place in Foley Square in Downtown NYC sponsored by The Women’s Unity Rally. The Women’s March Alliance’s website made it clear that they are not affiliated with Women’s March, Inc. or its founder. “We do not support any organization or person that is anti-Semitic, anti-gay, anti-woman or does not support equal rights for every human,” the website stated. The national Women’s March was rocked by claims of anti-Semitism. The local marches sustained some collateral damage and are grappling with the fallout.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) was at the New York City women’s march at Columbus Circle, while other prominent Democrats stayed away from the event due to accusations of virulent anti-Semitism within the national organization. At 29, Ocasio-Cortez is the youngest woman ever elected to Congress.
