A man was fatally shot by a New York Police officer early Friday morning stemming from an apparent domestic dispute inside an apartment in the Lower  East Side.  According to police,  someone inside the residence located at 227 Cherry Street called 911 at 7:15 a.m.  to report a domestic dispute.  When officers arrived at the apartment on Cherry Street between Pike Slip and Frank T. Modica Way, between the Lower East Side and Two Bridges, the  male caller told them the subject in question was in the rear of the apartment. The police officers reportedly found the man hiding in a closet and said he was calm and compliant while being escorted into the hallway, but  the 32-year-old suspect broke away from the officers and allegedly grabbed a large kitchen knife before running at the 911 caller, who apparently was his domestic partner. Police said he  ran toward his partner and began to stab the victim.  NYPD Chief of Department Terence A. Monahan said : “This happened in an instant — within in a second. As he’s walking out, he grabs that knife and immediately goes toward his domestic partner and begins stabbing him.”  Officers opened fire, striking the suspect, according to police. Five shots were fired in total — two from one officer, and three from another, according to Monahan.  It was all captured on body-cam footage, which has not been released.  Officers immediately rendered aid until an ambulance arrived, and the suspect was hospitalized, where he was pronounced dead, Monahan said. The victim was taken to the hospital and treated for slash wounds on the right side of his face and left shoulder, and a puncture wound to the right shoulder, police said. He is expected to survive.
