UN Secretary-General Appoints Parfait Onanga-Anyanga Special Envoy for Horn of Africa

United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres announced this week the appointment of Parfait Onanga-Anyanga of Gabon as his Special Envoy for the Horn of Africa region. Onanga-Anyanga has extensive experience with the United Nations, having served most recently as the Special Representative of the Secretary-General and Head of the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). In 2015, he served as Coordinator of the United Nations Headquarters response to the Boko Haram Crisis, prior to which he was Head of the United Nations Office in Burundi (BNUB) and System-wide Senior Coordinator on Burundi (2012-2014). Earlier in his career, Onanga-Anyanga was the acting Secretary to the United Nations Standing Advisory Committee for Security Questions in Central Africa. He also served as First Counsellor for Disarmament and Political Affairs at the Permanent Mission of Gabon to the United Nations in New York. Onanga-Anyanga, 59, holds a post‑graduate degree in political science from Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne University and a master’s degree in sociology from l’Université Omar Bongo in Libreville, Gabon.

France Takes Over The Presidency Of United Nations Security Council
Credit: onu.delegfrance.org / France and Germany will consecutively chair the UN Security Council in March and April 2019.
France assumed the presidency of the UN Security Council for one month beginning March 1, 2019 with a unique arrangement with Germany to co-chair the coveted rotating diplomatically important seat. Next month, Germany will take over the presidency of the Security Council for a one-month period. France seeks to strengthen international humanitarian law and humanitarian principles, particularly in Africa.
