Six Persons Injured In New York City Manhole Explosions

At least six persons were injured by exploding manholes in mid-town Manhattan Wednesday. Up to five active manhole fires were reported along East 32nd Street between Fifth and Madison fire officials said. All injuries were considered non life-threatening. Authorities shut down 32nd Street between Fifth and Madison avenues after the initial explosion occurred at 9:45 a.m. for hours to facilitate the emergency response.

FDNY said a building, at 6 East 32nd Street, was evacuated as authorities surveyed the area for the presence of carbon monoxide.
