WASHINGTON D.C. – U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s State Department has been drawn into the web of intrigue surrounding President Trump’s foreign policy with Ukraine. Secretary of State Pompeo admitted Wednesday that he was on the July 25 phone call in which Trump asked Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, according to CNBC.House Democrats are accusing Pompeo of blocking their impeachment inquiry by resisting the release of information to Congress regarding Trump’s foreign policy dealings with Ukraine. “I was on the phone call,” Pompeo said Wednesday during a news conference in Rome with Italy’s foreign minister. In an interview with Giovanna Pancheri of Sky TG24 in Rome, Pompeo said:
“We have, at the State Department, a very clear obligation to try and cooperate with our parliamentary, our congressional colleagues. I will do that. The State Department will do that. We – I’ve watched, I’ve seen the United States policy on Ukraine. We’ve been very clear about this. President Trump has been clear since the very beginning. We’ve wanted only the best things for the people of Ukraine, and that’s what – that’s what President Trump was trying to do. It was what he was trying to do for the entire time I’ve known him, including that phone call.”

Pompeo has defended his State Department, contending that each of the actions taken by officials was “entirely appropriate.”

More than 90% of the 235 Democrats in the House of Representatives now either support impeachment proceedings or have signaled they are open to supporting impeachment proceedings against President Trump. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi announced a formal impeachment inquiry of Mr. Trump in September soon after he admitted he had asked the Ukrainian president to investigate former Vice President Joe Biden and his son. Pelosi said the president’s actions represent a betrayal of his oath of office, of national security and of the integrity of U.S. elections.
