NEW YORK – The President of West African nation Guinea Alpha Conde reportedly intends to cling to power by seeking another term in office. Mass protests erupted in Guinea Monday, with at least two persons killed during demonstrations. President Conde is 81-years-old and his second and final five-year term in office is supposed to end this year. The opposition in Guinea vowed to boycott legislative elections set for February 16. President Conde published a draft constitution last December, contending that the country’s colonial-era laws need to be changed. However, the opposition views the move as a potential power grab to remain in office. At least 10 people were killed last October during anti-government protests.
About 50 protesters rallied in Manhattan Monday calling on President Conde to respect the constitution and not seek another term in power. “Alpha Conde Killer!” “Alpha Conde Killer”, protesters chanted as they marched along Third Avenue and 43rd Street in Mid-town Manhattan, then over to Dag Hammarskjöld Plaza across from the United Nations.
