UNITED NATIONS – NEW YORK – The government of Israel approved Gilad Erdan as the new Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations and the next Ambassador to the US, i24news reports. Erdan will be replacing Danny Danon, the outgoing Permanent Representative of Israel to the UN. Erdan will leave his post as Likud Regional Cooperation Minister and take over from Danon at the UN. Born in Ramat Gan, Danon, the 49-year-old member of Likud Party assumed the office on Oct. 15, 2015. Erdan will serve as the UN envoy for three years and will take up diplomatic duties as the Israel’s ambassador to the US after the next American president takes office in January 2021. Erdan’s dual ambassadorships is very unique. Danon’s term as Israeli ambassador to the UN was to have finished at the end of 2019, but due to Israeli elections and re-elections and re-relections (scheduled for early March), just before the year ended Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu extended Danon’s term until May 2020, hamodia.com reported.
Outgoing UN Ambassador Danon says world is gradually changing its perspective on Israel
“After five years in the halls of the United Nations and with an eye towards the future, I found out that at the United Nations, you have hostility towards Israel. There is a double standard, but you can create change.” -JNS

Erdan is looking to represent Israel with pride:
“I am going to represent Israel with tremendous pride. These are difficult days for Israel and the US — and in particular for US Judaism. The corona virus hit many and it is threatening the lives of citizens and their livelihoods. We must show solidarity with our brothers who are fighting abroad for the existence of Jewish lives. This is a central mission. In the coming years we expect many challenges: Iran, and old and new anti-Semitism.”
