AFRICAN UNION Calls For Ceasefire in ETHIOPIA – TIGRAY Military Conflict

The African Union called for a ceasefire in north Ethiopia where federal troops are fighting local Tigrayan authorities in an escalating bloody conflict in which hundreds of people have been killed. The 55 member states of the AU issued a plea Tuesday for an immediate end to the conflict.
“The Chairperson (Moussa Faki Mahamatrea) affirms the African Union’s firm attachment to the constitutional order, territorial integrity, unity and national sovereignty of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia to ensure stability in the country and in the Region. In this regard, the Chairperson appeals for the immediate cessation of hostilities and calls on parties to respect human rights and ensure the protection of civilians. He further urges the parties to engage in dialogue to seek a peaceful solution in the interests of the country.”

The escalating military conflict in Ethiopia is dangerously descending into all-out civil war
(britannica.com) Ethiopia is country located on the Horn of Africa.
Ethiopia is edging to the brink of civil war after Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed dispatched military troops against the governmnet of the country’s northern Tigray region last week. PM Ahmed has justified the military offensive by accusing the region’s ruling party of attacking a government defense post. Ahmed said many federal troops were “martyred” in the offensive. There are concerns of civil war as the northern region borders Eritrea and Sudan.
