Luis Almagro, President of the Organization of American States Secretary General met with Pedro Brolo, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala Tuesday at OAS headquarters in Washington D.C. The 51st General Assembly of the OAS will be held in Guatemala in 2021, as approved last October by acclamation by the 50th General Assembly of the Organization, which was held virtually. The date of the 51st General Assembly of the OAS will be determined by the Permanent Council. Guatemala has already hosted the main annual meeting of the OAS in 1986 (Guatemala City), 1999 (Guatemala City) and 2013 (Antigua). Guatemala’s government in November requested assistance from the OAS to help launch a dialogue with “diverse political forces” after a massive protest over 2021 budget cuts turned violent, according to Reuters. Meanwhile, the Biden administration said on Saturday it was immediately suspending Trump-era asylum agreements with El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras, part of a bid to undo his Republican predecessor’s hardline immigration policies.
Almagro was a favorite son of the Trump administration for his fervent support of its effort to replace Nicholas Maduro as president of Venezuela with opposition leader Juan Guaidó.
