UNITED  NATIONS  –   NEW  YORK –  Linda Thomas-Greenfield presented her credentials as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations to Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday preparing to take on the task of carrying out American diplomacy on the world stage.  Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield brings a resume of deep diplomatic experience and will help restore the U.S.-UN  relationship that was strained  after four years of President Trump’s administration which resisted multilateralism. President Trump did not hide his scorn for the  UN and took a strong-arm unilateral “America First”  diplomatic posture in  global affairs.

“Diplomacy is back. Multilateralism is back. America is back, and we’re ready to get to work.”

-U.S. Ambassador to UN  Linda Thomas-Greenfield

During a press briefing after presenting her UN credentials to the  Secretary-General,  Ambassador Thomas-Greenfield stated that she had the honor of  serving as a U.S. diplomat for more than 35 years before she retired. “And throughout my time representing America all over the world I found that diplomacy is about showing compassion, it’s about managing points of differentiation, and it’s about bringing people together,”  she said.

“The United Nations is the world’s most important forum for bringing people and countries together, and I take that seriously as a U.S. diplomat. As I made clear in my testimony to the U.S. Senate, this administration knows that when America is at the table and acting in accordance with our values, the United States* is an indispensable institution for the advancement of peace, security, and collective well-being We’re clear-eyed about the difficult work that needs to be done, from elevating human rights to reforming the UN itself, to addressing conflicts old and new around the world, and we look forward to engaging our allies and our partners to get it done. After all, we’re stronger when we are working together.”
