BRONX, NY – A fire swept through Justine Dominican Restaurant located at 28 E. 167th Street in the Bronx early Monday causing extensive damage. There were no reports of civilian injuries during the blaze which gutted the restaurant. But at least 2 firefighters suffered minor injuries. At 9:22 a.m., the FDNY received a report of a fire at the restaurant. FDNY crew arrived on the scene within three minutes. The fire initially started in the restaurant’s duct work, which is the space between the roof and the top of the ceiling, according to FDNY Deputy Assistant Chief Michael Gala. At approximately 9:35 a.m. the fire went to a second alarm as extensive fire spread in the cockloft. “It was very difficult to access,” DAC Gala said. At 10: 22 a.m., two 2 Tower Ladders were placed in operation from the street. At 11:32 a.m. the fire went to third alarm with a third Tower Ladder going into operation. The multi-versal was placed in operation and one handline from the roof of the exposure. At 12:07 p.m. the fire was transmitted up to a full 4th Alarm with 3 additional Battalions on the scene. The units respond to staging and the chiefs responded to the Command Post set up. The NY MTA shut down the 167 Street Station as precaution. At 12:30 p.m. the fire was brought under control. The cause of the fire is unknown and is being investigated. At the height of the four-alarm firm, there were about 50 fire units on the scene and approximately 200 firefighters and EMT crew, according to DAC Gala.
