France reopened its embassy in the Libyan city Tripoli Monday as President Macron seeks closer ties with the oil-rich North African country’s new authorities. Paris closed its embassy after evacuating some 50 French and British nationals as fighting broke out in Tripoli in July 2014. It based its ambassador in neighbouring Tunis, the capital of Tunisia. President Macron said France’s priority is that security and peace in Libya must be supported to bring stability to the whole region.

“I arrived in Tripoli to reopen the French embassy in Libya, and I am determined to work with all strength to strengthen relations with the Libyan authorities and the Libyan people who hosted me.”
