Chad’s New Military Leader Visits NIGER in Diplomatic Offensive To Win African Friends

A son arrivée dans la capitale Niamey, il a été accueilli par le Premier Ministre Nigérien, M. Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou. Aussitôt, le Chef de l’Etat a été reçu au Palais présidentiel par le  Président Mohamed Bazoum.

The President of the Transitional Military Council, Lieutenant General MAHAMAT IDRISS DEBY, paid an official visit to Niger on Monday, May 10, 2021. On his arrival in the capital Niamey, he was greeted by the Nigerien Prime Minister, Mr. Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou. Immediately, the Head of State was received at the Presidential Palace by President Mohamed Bazoum,  the  CHAD Embassy in the United States reports.  It was the first official international trip by Chad’s new leader aimed at winning over fellow Africans in a diplomatic offensive.  The late Chadian president’s son, a four-star general, assumed power of the oil-rich  north-central Africa.  Many anti-Mahamat Idriss Deby protesters have taken to the streets of Chad’s capital, N’Djamena denouncing what they called a “monarchy”.   A coalition of opposition political parties and civil society organisations demand that  the transition to be led by a civilian.  Chad’s new military transitional government  has banned several protests, deploying police using tear gas to break up gatherings. 

Meanwhile, the Nigerien Head of State warmly welcomed the new Chad leader. The Nigerien head of state also personally attending the funeral of the late Chad president where he reiterated his country’s support for Chad. 

“The two countries which have a common destiny and which share interests better than any other country in their respective neighborhood. Discussions between the two statesmen and their respective delegations focused on issues affecting bilateral cooperation. From these discussions a convergence of views emerged.”
