NEW YORK CITY –  Under the theme “The Fight Continues”  thousands gathered  in the streets of Manhattan this weekend marching and celebrating in the NY City Gay Pride Parade.  A sea of rainbow flags were displayed proudly as massive crowds were spotted all over the city.  The celebrations took place ahead of  Monday June 28, the  anniversary of the first gay pride march, held in NYC  on the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising. Today marks 52 years since the start of riots at the Stonewall Inn in NYC, the police raid that sparked the  beginning of the gay rights movement in America.

“NYC Pride announces the official theme for 2021, “The Fight Continues,” as the kick-off to this year’s events and programming. In a time of tremendous adversity for the community on many fronts, “The Fight Continues” reflects the multitude of battles we’ve been fighting as a country and as a city. With the coronavirus pandemic still ongoing, issues of police brutality, the alarming murder rate for trans POC, economic hardship, climate disasters, violent efforts to disenfranchise voters, our rights as a community being questioned at the level of the Supreme Court, and more, we are in the midst of many different fights.”

COVID-19  Greatly Limited Crowd Size of Pride Parade

Because of COVID-19,  the  Pride parade was mostly a virtual event, drawing only a tiny percentage of the crowds that would have normally showed up pre-pandemic.
