Dr.  Uzoma Emenike is the current Nigeria Ambassador to the United States, the first female to serve as the west African nation’s  top diplomat in America.  Nigeria appointed Emenike as the country’s US Ambassador in January 2021 to serve during President Joe Biden’s  administration.  Until Emenike’s appointment, the Nigerian embassy in US has been headed by men since its opening on October 1, 1960.  Ambassador Emenike is 55-years-old. 

Dr. Emenike joined the Nigeria Foreign Service more than 30 years ago and has served in the Protocol and the Africa Departments of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.  Dr. Emenike previously served  as Nigeria’s ambassador to Ireland  before coming to America.   Ambassador Emenike was posted to the Nigerian Embassy in Abidjan, Cote D’Ivoire in 1992, where she served for six years. Upon her return to headquarters in Nigeria, she was variously deployed to other departments of the Ministry, during which she represented Nigeria in numerous bilateral and multilateral missions, both at home and abroad. In 2002, Dr. Emenike left the Foreign Service for the private sector where  she worked as a Management Consultant.  Ambassador Emenike has two Bachelor’s degrees, two Master’s degrees, and a Doctorate Degree. Dr. Emenike holds a B.Sc Sociology and Anthropology from the University Of Maiduguri, Nigeria and an LL.B from the University of Reading in the U.K. She also earned a Master’s degree in International Law and Diplomacy from the University of Lagos, Nigeria and another Master’s in International Management from University of Reading in the U.K.

Dr. Emenike Replaces Ambassador Sylvanus Nsofor as US Ambassador

Dr. Eminike replaced Sylvanus Adiewere Nsofor as US Ambassador. Nsofor died in  December 2020 at age 85.  Nsofor, a retired justice from Nigeria’s Court of Appeal, assumed the office of his country’s ambassador to the US in November 2017.  Nigeria president Muhammadu Buhari  appointed Nsofor as the nation’s top envoy to  America.  It was Nsofor’s first ambassadorial posting.

Ambassador Emenike is married to Chief Ikechi Emenike, and is from Umukabia-Ohuhu in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State.
