WASHINGTON DC – Matthew Miller, an Obama-era Democrat, has been named as the new spokesperson of the U.S. Department of State. Secretary of State Antony J. Blinken announced Miller’s appointment Tuesday, saying “Matt is no stranger to navigating and communicating on complex, global challenges like those we face today.” Miller previously served as the Director of the Office of Public Affairs at the Department of Justice during President Barack Obama’s administration, leading the department’s communications team and serving as Attorney General Eric Holder’s spokesman. He also worked for the 2012 Obama campaign. In 2022, Miller took a leave of absence from the Vianovo strategic advisory firm where he was a partner to serve as a special advisor to the National Security Council at the Biden White House. At the NSC, Miller led the U.S. government’s communications and legislative affairs on the war in Ukraine.
“I benefitted greatly from Matt’s wisdom, his experience in government, and his deep understanding of foreign policy when he was tapped to head up my nomination. Matt stepped up once again in the early months of Russia’s further invasion of Ukraine when he took leave to join the National Security Council to lead our whole of government communications and outreach as part of our support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and defense.”
