WASHINGTON    DC   –  Uganda’s President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni has signed the most extreme anti-homosexuality law in Africa that includes the death penalty.  In Uganda, they can now kill those who dare to be gay and engage in  same-sex  sexual  relations.  U.S. President Joe Biden called for an immediate repeal of the law and threatened sanctions of the Ugandan government.   Uganda’s harsh anti-LGBT law has forced gays in the country into hiding fearing for their lives. Their have been several reports of anti-LGBT violence in Uganda in which victims have been beaten nearly to death.

“The enactment of Uganda’s Anti-Homosexuality Act is a tragic violation of universal human rights—one that is not worthy of the Ugandan people, and one that jeopardizes the prospects of critical economic growth for the entire country. I join with people around the world—including many in Uganda—in calling for its immediate repeal. No one should have to live in constant fear for their life or being subjected to violence and discrimination. It is wrong. This shameful Act is the latest development in an alarming trend of human rights abuses and corruption in Uganda.”

-President Biden

The U.S. president added that  “we are considering additional steps, including the application of sanctions and restriction of entry into the United States against anyone involved in serious human rights abuses or corruption.”     Ugandan President Museveni gave his blessing to the law May 29,   signing the extreme measure Parliament passed in March including the death penalty for “aggravated homosexuality.”   For anyone “Promoting homosexuality” the law allows a 20-year prison sentence for individuals. More than 30 countries throughout Africa ban same-sex relationships, but Uganda is the first on the continent to ban homosexuality entirely. And even landlords who chose to rent a room to homosexuals face 10 years in jail.

“Innocent Ugandans now fear going to hospitals, clinics, or other establishments to receive life-saving medical care lest they be targeted by hateful reprisals. Some have been evicted from their homes or fired from their jobs.”
