The International Criminal Court announced Monday it has closed its investigation of alleged crimes against humanity committed in Kenya after the country’s  2007 election. The investigation was opened in 2010 against six suspects. The probe failed to produce any convictions, as the charges against the six suspects were either not confirmed or withdrawn or terminated without prejudice.  After the elections, a series of protests and demonstrations followed in which some 1,200 people were killed. The attacks during the violence were reportedly ethnic-based.  The suspects included government officials.

“After assessing all the information available to me at this time, I have decided to conclude the investigation phase in the Situation in Kenya. I have reached this decision after considering the specific facts and circumstances of this Situation. Accordingly, the Office will not pursue additional cases into the alleged criminal responsibility of other persons,” ICC Deputy Prosecutor, Nazhat Shameem Khan,  said in a statement regarding her decision to conclude the investigation phase of the Situation in the Republic of Kenya.
