The U.S. military has made no changes to its National Guard presence for the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee despite the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. About 1,700 National Guardsmen and a small number of active-duty personnel will support civil authorities during the convention, according to Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh. There have been no requests for additional National Guardsmen, Singh told reporters Monday.

“The support of the approximately 1,700 personnel was pre-planned support to the Republican National Convention and not in response to the events that took place this weekend,” Singh said. The personnel are supporting the FBI, U.S. Secret Service and Milwaukee Metro Police Department for 24/7 operations, according to Singh. The National Guard has provided security support for the Republican and Democratic National Conventions in the past.
