President Donald Trump announced Thursday he will nominate national security advisor Mike Waltz as U.S. ambassador to the United Nations after reports he was being ousted from his current post.

“I am pleased to announce that I will be nominating Mike Waltz to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations,” President Trump wrote on Truth Social.  “From his time in uniform on the battlefield, in Congress and, as my National Security Advisor, Mike Waltz has worked hard to put our Nation’s Interests first. I know he will do the same in his new role.”

In the interim, Secretary of State Marco Rubio will serve as national security adviser while continuing at the State Department, Trump said. It was reported earlier in the day that Waltz was being forced out by Trump amid the fallout from the Signal chat leak scandal in March where journalist Jeffrey Goldberg was mistakenly included in a discussion of sensitive military information.  Waltz created the Signal group chat in which officials, including Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, disclosed details about US attacks on Houthi rebels in Yemen.  Hegseth is also facing pressure from the chat scandal with calls for him to resign or be fired.  It was the first major cabinet shakeup of Trump’s new administration.
