The United Kingdom named career diplomat Christian Turner as its new ambassador to the United States. Turner will replace Peter Mandelson who was fired in September over links to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein. Turner is described as one of the UK’s most experienced senior diplomats. In announcing Turner’s appointment, Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “I’m delighted that Christian Turner has been appointed to be British Ambassador to the United States of America. The United Kingdom and United States have a very special relationship, and Christian’s extensive experience as an outstanding diplomat will support this uniquely close bond and ensure it continues to flourish. I warmly congratulate him as he starts his work to further build our strong economic and security ties and deliver for the British people.”
Turner, who previously served as Britain’s High Commissioner to Pakistan, said in a statement: “I am honoured to be nominated to serve as the UK’s Ambassador to the USA. Our two countries share an historic partnership rooted in common values, shared security and deep economic ties. At a pivotal time for the transatlantic relationship, I look forward to working with President Trump’s administration, and leaders in Congress, business and society to strengthen that bond in the years ahead.”
Turner was appointed as the UK’s representative to the United Nations in May, a role he was expected to take up at the end of 2025. He previously served as Britain’s high commissioner to Pakistan and Kenya. Turner will be tasked with steering the UK’s relationship with the US Trump administration. The UK government has expressed concern over what appears to be Trump’s softening stance on Russia regarding the war in Ukraine. There are concerns that recent statements by Trump could embolden Russia while undermining European security. For now, the UK has much confidence in Turner for his new role in maintaining the crucial “special relationship”.
Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper said: “Christian Turner brings exceptional diplomatic experience and deep understanding to this vital role. His leadership in strengthening partnerships across the world will be invaluable as we work together to uphold the UK’s crucial special relationship with the United States. “
