Ethiopia strongly condemned the “heinous” attack that killed two of its UN peacekeepers in South Sudan Monday. Unidentified gunmen ambushed a patrol traveling to Pajut, Jonglei killing the two peacekeepers and injuring seven others. Three Ethiopians were among the injured.

“We strongly condemn this heinous attack. The attack is an affront to the sanctity and inviolability of United Nations peacekeeping,” Ethiopia’s UN mission said in a statement Tuesday.  Ethiopia called for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice.  

The Ethiopian peacekeepers were part of the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). The head of UNMISS said in a statement Monday that attacks against UN peacekeepers may constitute war crimes under international law, including international humanitarian law.
