United Nations ‘Welcomes’ Resumption of Negotiations on Situation in Venezuela

UNITED  NATIONS  –   UN Secretary-General António Guterres welcomes the announcement by the Norwegian Foreign Ministry on Friday 2 August that representatives of the main political actors in Venezuela continue the negotiations initiated in Oslo.  “It is positive that the parties continue in their search for solutions for the country and the well-being of the Venezuelan people. I reiterate my gratitude towards the Government of Barbados for their hospitality”,  the Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Ine Eriksen Søreide said in a statement.       

“The Secretary‑General reiterated his strong support for the Norwegian facilitation initiative.  He added that a negotiated agreement is urgently needed to reach a peaceful resolution to the crisis.  The Secretary-General encouraged the main political actors of Venezuela, and their representatives in the negotiations, to remain fully committed to these efforts, for the benefit of the people of Venezuela.”

Venezuela has been embroiled in political crisis since opposition leader Juan Guaidó proclaimed he is the legitimate president of the country in January 2019 in a bid to oust President Nicholas Maduro.  The US immediately throw its full support behind Guaidó who called for Maduro to cede power.  Samuel Moncada, Permanent Representative of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to the UN, accused the US over trying to undermine the latest political peace talks held in the Caribbean nation of Barbados that began last month.
