Mali was plunged into political chaos following a military coup last year on August 18 that forced out President Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta . A group of military officers, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People (CNSP), has controlled the West African country after the mutineers detained Keïta at gunpoint, arrested him and forced him to resign. Former Mali defence minister and retired colonel Bah Ndaw was named interim president while the leader of the junta that seized power in April, Colonel Assimi Goita, was appointed vice president. Then in June 2021, Transitional vice-president Colonel Assimi Goïta, a leader of the August 2020 coup, announced that he had taken power in a second coup.

At least 12 German soldiers were among UN peacekeepers injured in a vehicle bomb attack on a camp in northern Mali on Friday, the UN said. The incident follows Thursday’s attack with another improvised explosive device on another UN patrol in the same area, which did not result in casualties. All of the wounded soldiers were flown by helicopter to Gao, where they were being treated at German, French and Chinese medical facilities, according to German Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbaue. Three of the soldiers were severely wounded.
